Primary Purpose of Organizational Unit:Morehead Planetarium and Science Center is a national leader in informal science education, utilizing the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill's resources to educate the public and promote a better understanding of science.
Since its founding in 1949 as the first planetarium on a college campus and the first in the South, millions of North Carolinian students, teachers, and families as well as visitors from around the world have benefitted from Morehead's science programs.
In the 1960s and 1970s, Morehead played a significant role in expanding humankind's exploration of the cosmos by training 62 NASA astronauts in celestial navigation, including 11 of the 12 who walked on the Moon. Today, Morehead is inspiring the next generation of scientific explorers through top-notch educational and public programming, including fulldome planetarium shows, interactive exhibits, hands-on classes, summer camps, and statewide outreach like the annual North Carolina Science Festival.

Morehead Planetarium and Science Center is looking for talented high school students aged 16 or older to work in our Summer Science Camps from June 9 - August 8, 2025. We offer exciting, hands-on summer camps to kids from rising kindergarten to rising eighth grade. During the summer, campers explore different areas of science through experiential lessons and unique engagement opportunities.
If you are passionate about working with children, science, or education, please consider sharing your excitement with campers in Chapel Hill as a Summer Camp Assistant Counselor. Our staff enjoys a schedule that is flexible around summer plans! There will be mandatory camp training May 29 - June 1, 2025.
Job duties include:
* Training on science content and curricula geared towards kids ages 5-13 (If you don't have a science background, don't worry - we'll teach you!)
* Learning best practices for teaching camp activities, including working with campers with special needs, using inclusive teaching methods, classroom management support, and general camp management
* Co-leading and assisting with science activities for groups of up to 20 campers with a Lead Counselor and Counselor-In-Training
* Supervising campers to ensure they are safe and having fun
* Communicating with camp administrators involving camp incidents, materials needs, and general camp updates
High school diploma or equivalency; or demonstrated possession of the competencies necessary to perform the work.
Required Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience:High level of responsibility, organization, and resourcefulness; Strong verbal and written communication skills.
Preferred Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience:Must be a high school student at least 16 years of age by May 1, 2025 and eligible to work in NC. Experience working with children.
Special Physical/Mental Requirements:Moderate physical effort is required. Counselors may spend time teaching inside and outside (based on camp activities). Prolonged periods of time will also be spent outside during pick up and drop off periods. Tasks to be completed with or without reasonable accommodation.

Applicants are asked to be available for a minimum of 5 camp weeks; however, preference will be given to applicants who are available for more weeks. The camp coordinator will design a flexible staff schedule to consider other responsibilities such as summer classes, etc.
Applicants must be 16 years old by May 1, 2025 to be eligible for this position. Others may apply to our Counselor-in-Training volunteer program.
