GENERAL SUMMARY/ OVERVIEW STATEMENT:

The PSPU Staff Nurse is a registered nurse who is responsible for assuring competent, compassionate nursing care for specific patients and families. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to, pre-procedural assessment, administration of moderate sedation, hemodynamic monitoring during diagnostic and interventional procedures, and post-procedural recovery and teaching. The staff nurse serves as a resource to support staff. The staff nurse is responsible and accountable for the overall nursing care management of a designated group of patients. The PSPU staff nurse shares responsibility to ensure ancillary unit tasks are completed appropriately and in a timely manner. They collaborate with the Nurse Manager and members of the Patient Care Team to achieve optimal patient outcomes.Theye also collaborate with the patient toward efficient and effective personnel and unit management.
Principal duties and responsibilities:

Provides competent, compassionate nursing care based on scientific principles and the use of nursing process and a primary nursing model.

1.1 Provides and maintains a therapeutic environment for patients and families.

1.2 Articulates the role of the PSPU staff nurse to the patient, family and health team members.

1.3 Provides experienced patient care throughout the entire procedural process, from pre-procedural assessment, intra-procedure monitoring and sedation administration, to post-procedure recovery.

1.4 Identifies, facilitates, and evaluates outcomes of nursing care for an individual patient or group of patients, applying the nursing process.

1.5 Coordinates involvement of the patient, family and health team members in patient care including patient/family teaching and discharge planning.

1.6 Documents relevant patient information.

1.7 Communicates the plan of care and other pertinent information to/from other health team members.

1.8 Helps define standards of excellence for patient care; participates in improvement of patient care services in a cost-effective manner.

1.9 Demonstrates the knowledge and skills necessary to deliver direct nursing care with consideration of the aging process, human developmental stages, and cultural patterns.

2.0 Collaborates with other providers and directs nonprofessional nursing personnel in maintaining recognized standards.

2.1 Teaches and directs all nursing/non-nursing personnel for whom they are responsible.

2.2 Participates in orientation of new permanent and temporary staff members.

2.3 Appropriately applies nursing resources.

2.4 Interprets hospital and departmental policies and procedures to nurses and other health team members.

3.0 Participates in daily operational activities necessary for safe patient/staff environment.

3.1 Utilizes resources efficiently to facilitate optimal patient care.

3.2 Rotates into the role of resource nurse after 6 months in the department, helping to coordinate same day and inpatient procedures.

3.3 Performs patient and health care team phone calls along with additional calls as directed by the Nurse Manager.

3.4 Collaborate with physicians to ensure appropriate scheduling of same-day procedures.
3.5 Maintain and troubleshoot all equipment

a. Arrange and coordinate all equipment preventative maintenance
b. Monitor the care of equipment, instruments, and supplies

c. Handle all bronchoscope-related issues IE: transport scopes for HLD, ensure all scopes are bar coded

d. Perform cleaning and high level disinfection (HLD) of all necessary equipment
e. Coordinate sterilization of equipment

f. Monitor and maintain emergency airway carts in the ICUs

3.6 Maintain supply inventory list and order all supplies for the unit. Stock rooms and maintain appropriate par levels.

3.7 Participates in unit and departmental committees for formulation of nursing and hospital policies and procedures.

3.8 Perform miscellaneous tasks to help maintain an efficient workflow throughout the unit as needed.

4.0 Maintains and updates clinical knowledge and skills based on current nursing education practices.

4.1 Adheres to Department of Pulmonary requirements for required training.

4.2 Identifies own learning needs and goals and develops a plan to meet them.

4.3 Maintains and develops professional practice through continuing educational programs and appropriate learning experiences.

4.4 Contributes to relevant committees, professional meetings, continuing educational and/or formal academic programs.

Qualifications
Skills/abilities/competencies required:

  • IV Placement
  • Phlebotomy/EKG
  • Medication administration, including moderate sedation
  • Telemetry
  • Pre-procedure set-up and equipment preparation
  • Post-procedure patient recovery
  • Stocking and cleaning procedure rooms
  • Ordering all supplies for the unit via Ebuy through Peoplesoft
  • Collection and preparation of specimen samples.
  • Assists Interventional Pulmonologist for the following procedures, including but not limited to:
  • Flexible bronchoscopy w/wo biopsies and brushings
  • Bronchothermoplasty
  • Rigid Bronchoscopy
  • Endobronchial laser therapy
  • EBUS/Super Dimension
  • Photodynamic therapy
  • Fluoroscopy
  • Thoracentesis
  • Chest tube placement
  • Percutaneous tracheotomy
  • PEG placement
  • Tracheotomy tube exchanges
  • Pleurx Catheter placement
  • Endobronchial valve placement
  • Blood Transfusion
The best candidate will embody MGH core values, should be flexible, detail oriented, a creative problem solver, energetic, and comfortable working both independently and in a multidisciplinary team.

Candidate will be proficient in computer usage, be very comfortable with high tech equipment, and possess excellent interpersonal written and verbal communication skills.

Hours: 4:10-hour day shifts, rotating schedule. Requires occasional overtime and 1-2 weekend per month on-call status
LICENSES, CERTIFICATIONS, and/or REGISTRATIONS :
  • Current Massachusetts licensure as a registered nurse. BSN required.
  • Current Basic Life Support (BLS) and Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certifications.
  • 2-3 years ICU, critical care, ED, or procedural experience required.
  • Demonstrates clinical competence in the area of nursing practice predominant on the unit. Good clinical background in pulmonology preferred.
  • Completes competencies for Critical Care Orientation including successful completion of conscious sedation program administered by the Department of Anesthesia.
