The Cooperative Institute for Marine and Atmospheric Studies (CIMAS) of the University of Miami, Rosenstiel School of Marine, Atmospheric, and Earth Science, invites applications for a Senior Research Associate II position. The research involves using state-of-the-art numerical model simulations to assess the relative skill of the North American Multi-Model Ensemble (NMME) and the Unified Forecast System (USF) models on S2S timescales, with the aim on predicting extreme weather events (e.g., tropical cyclone, tornado outbreak, severe wind, extreme rainfall, hail, etc.).

Specific Duties include:

  • Investigating whether known large-scale drivers of extreme weather are well represented in the UFS and NMME
  • Developing hybrid statistical-dynamical forecast tools in combination with the predictions from the UFS and NMME
  • Creating products to provide input for extreme weather outlook (e.g., seasonal hurricane outlook)
  • Assisting in developing a useful prediction product to inform the CPC operations and stakeholders of US regional severe weather risks
  • Responsible for actively participating in scientific discussions among AOML, GFDL, and CPC
  • Presenting findings at scientific meetings; and co-authoring peer-reviewed scientific publications

Applicants must have a Master's Degree or higher in Meteorology, Physical Oceanography, or a related field, and 1 year of relevant work-related experience. Necessary skills include programing in a higher-level language (MATLAB, C++, Fortran, and Python) and experience in a high-level computer environment (UNIX, LINUX). Desired qualifications also include the ability to analyze large datasets from model outputs. Prior experience with hybrid statistical-dynamical forecast models and deterministic and probabilistic prediction skill assessment is desirable, but not required.

The incumbent must have excellent written and oral communication skills in order to communicate with a diverse group of people in large collaborative projects.
