Job Summary
Mentor and advise undergraduate students in the Department of Mathematics regarding course selection, career interests, degree progress, and other aspects of the undergraduate academic experience.

Duties & Responsibilities

Curriculum Advising
• Head academic advisor for selected mathematics majors.
• Resource advisor with drop-in hours for any U of I student with math advising questions and any math major with general academic advising questions.
• Identify math majors in academic distress and oversee mandatory advising of same.
• Advisor for prospective inter-collegiate transfers to math major.
• Primary liaison with campus for advising on ALEKS math placement exam.
• Oversee enforcement of ALEKS math course prerequisites (Math 112, 115, 220, 221, 234) by supervising early reminders to enrolled students and using Registration Maintainer access to change student schedule for non-compliant students once the prerequisite deadline is passed.
• Academic advisor for minors in Math and Teaching of Math.
• Serve as contact with LAS and Admissions for orientation of all new students in math, actuarial science, Math/CS to set, review, and revise the online and on-campus orientation schedules; to respond to concerns; and to share information relevant to general math course advising.
• Recruit, train, and schedule faculty to assist in advising new transfer students.
• Develop, implement, and evaluate online orientation advising program for international students.
• Work with Admissions and other departments to meet student math enrollment needs.
• Create materials, oversee and participate in math orientation for new math transfer students.
• Supervise evaluation of mathematics transfer courses of 100- and 200-level courses.

Recruiting
• Contributing to the design and execution of student recruitment efforts.
• Planning and assisting with undergraduate student events, including orientation, and activity fairs. Direct preparation of review materials for Orange and Blue Days and Admitted Student Days.
• Review and create materials given out for individual prospective student appointments.
• Coordinate departmental efforts to educate campus audiences about department courses and degree programs.

Training
• Train advising staff on policies and procedures of the job.
• Inform and serve as a resource for Director of Undergraduate Studies.
• Train, assign and review work, conduct performance evaluations, address work issues, approve time, set work schedules, set goals of Academic Advisor(s) in collaboration with the Director of Undergraduate Studies.
• Hire, train, and supervise graduate student advisors as needed for summer orientation.
• Hire, train, assign and review work, address work issues, approve time, set work schedules, and set goals of academic hourly employees when applicable.
• Oversee graduate assistant advising of freshmen.

• Other duties as assigned to further the mission of the unit.

Required Qualifications

Bachelor's degree.

Two (2) years of experience advising undergraduates.

Two (2) years of professional experience advising or working directly with student academic affairs in secondary or higher education.

Preferred Qualifications

Master's degree in mathematics, Mathematics-adjacent field, or relevant student affairs fields such as education, social work among other area.

One (1) year experience leading advising program for specific cohort of students in relevant student affairs areas such as academic advising, probationary advising, career coaching, admissions, student records, among other areas.

  • Demonstrated ability to work from a developmental advising perspective.
  • Demonstrated ability to track and assess student academic progress.
  • Excellent ability to work independently, as well as collaboratively, with a wide range of on-campus and off-campus constituencies.
  • Knowledge of academic skills and student development issues associated with undergraduate student populations, especially those that require enhanced advising and academic skills support.
  • Graduate studies in or similar demonstrated interest in issues in undergraduate education or student development.
  • Successful candidates will demonstrate a working level of proficiency in the following competencies: • Facilitating Student Development, Success, and Outcomes: Ability to work developmentally with students; ability to promote student learning, development, and success by applying varied advising approaches to diverse individual student situations. • Communicating for Effective Relationships: Knowledge and application of communication techniques (including listening skills) and relationship building skills to work with a variety of individuals and groups in a constructive and collaborative manner. • Communicating Complex Concepts: Knowledge and use of summarization and simplification techniques to explain complex concepts in simple, clear language appropriate to the audience. • Using Resourcefulness and Good Judgment: Ability to apply past experience and analysis of information to arrive at sound and timely conclusions. • Planning and Organizing: Ability to mobilize time and other resources to get things done. • Valuing Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Belonging: Ability to work with a variety of individuals in a constructive and civil manner while appreciating the unique contribution of individuals from varied cultures, race, creed, color, national origin, age, sex, disability, sexual orientation and gender identity.
Appointment Information

This is a 100% full-time Academic Professional position, appointed on a 12-month basis. The expected start date is as soon as possible after the deadline. The budgeted salary range for the position is $55,000-65,000. We strive to provide a competitive salary, considering factors such as available market data, internal equity, candidate experience and qualifications, collective bargaining agreements, and budget constraints. The final salary offer will be determined through a thorough assessment of these elements. Sponsorship for work authorization is not available for this position.
