Job Summary: The Research Technician uses fundamental concepts, practices, and procedures of a particular field of specialization to perform varied scientific research tasks of moderate complexity requiring application and adaptation of established techniques, procedures, and criteria.
Additional Department Summary: Conducts independent as well as collaborative research and data collection in the areas of molecular genetics, sensory biology, and behavior.
This job involves some exposure to chemicals and other hazards including electrical equipment around water, glassware, and equipment requiring careful use.
Required Minimum Qualifications: High school diploma or GED and four (4) years of research support experience; OR associate's degree and two (2) years of research support experience; OR bachelor's degree and some research support experience.
Skills and Knowledge: Familiarity with molecular genetics techniques including DNA extraction, gel electrophoresis, and gel imaging. Experience with rare (e.g., cavefish) husbandry and care in a research setting. Excellent organizational and record keeping skills (e.g., on Excel, GoogleDocs, Microsoft365 Suite). Ability to work independently and collaboratively with lab personnel (e.g., PI, graduate and undergraduate students, etc.). Ability to work in an environment that sometimes requires performing physically taxing duties like lifting water buckets and mixing buffer solutions.
Preferred Qualifications: Bachelor's degree in biology and two (2) years of research experience in a biological setting, performing molecular genetics techniques, and/or fish care and handling. Experience with rare fishes (e.g, cavefishes).
