Job Summary:

The Recovery Coach (RC) position will provide recovery coaching to clients at the treatment center with a specific focus on clients who are currently incarcerated or otherwise involved with the justice system. The RC will provide peer recovery support services to clients at any point on the recovery continuum. The RC will support clients throughout their care and work with them and their care teams to develop short- and long-term treatment goals. This position will maintain ongoing patient support regardless of relapse and will serve as a motivator, ally, role model, and advocate for patients with substance use disorders. The RC should possess thorough understanding of community culture to address the barriers to successful recovery, use human experience language and provide links to community resources and treatment options. This is a non-exempt position.

Essential Functions of Position:

  • The RC must provide emotional and social support.
  • The RC must share recovery experience and use coaching and mentoring techniques to support a client's awareness and understanding that he or she possesses his or her own recovery capital to help sustain his or her recovery.
  • The RC must support clients in making positive life changes and developing skills to facilitate their recovery
  • The RC must help clients to discuss and try new strategies for developing recovery-supportive friendships, reconnecting or improving family relationships, and identifying and using recovery-community networks
  • The RC must assist clients in creating personally meaningful links to treatment, peer recovery support services, and mutual aid and support clients in their efforts to build their capacity to move between and among these services and supports as needed
  • The RC must act in an open and transparent way as a role model and living example of a person in recovery
  • When appropriate, the RC must use the peer relationship to assist with motivation and facilitate connections to primary and specialty medical, dental, and mental health services as well as social services
  • The RC must act as a recovery liaison and support the client in preparing for or accompanying the client to meetings with, for example, probation officers, social workers, etc.
  • The RC must serve as an advocate for clients and assist clients in learning self-advocacy skills
  • The RC must provide Recovery Coaching services in a person-centered and strength-based manner
  • Write brief non-clinical notes in the client's medical record in support of effective and collaborative medical care and social services.
  • Systematically review the progress and challenges of each client with a peer supervisor, to understand the most effective ways to support and encourage patient success.
  • Assists with data collection for quality assurance and program evaluation
  • Perform other duties as needed.

Requirements for the position:
  • High school diploma or GED required.
  • Successful completion of a CCAR approved Recovery Coach Academy before hire, or the successful completion of a CCAR approved Recovery Coach Academy within 4 months of hire.
  • Certified Addiction Recovery Coach (CARC) certification required within first 12 months of employment.
  • Strong advocacy skills along with knowledge of community-based services, resources, and local recovery community.
  • Effective use of the Internet and Microsoft Office programs such as Word and Excel
  • Lived experience with 2 years of sustained and uninterrupted recovery preferred
  • Experience working with incarcerated clients preferred.
  • Familiarity with the Department of Corrections and other justice systems preferred.
  • Demonstrated understanding of the multiple pathways approach to recovery from SUD and willingness to embrace a client-centered, client-driven approach that recognizes an individual's preferences and autonomy. Recovery by any means possible.
