Quality Improvement Fellowship

Are you interested in developing your Quality Improvement (QI) skills to impact the lives of others? If so, the Quality Improvement Fellowship Training Program at Cincinnati Children's may be just what you're looking for.

Fellowship Overview

The Quality Improvement (QI) Fellowship Program offers a unique, one-year experience for early-career professionals with a master's degree (bachelor's degree also welcomed) that are passionate about improvement. The program cultivates leadership through real-world experience in quality improvement applying methodology to changing health outcomes, develops future Quality Improvement Specialists, and increases diversity from underrepresented groups in our workforce. Our mission is to create the next generation of leaders in Quality Improvement who will drive healthcare transformation locally and globally. The QI Fellowship will run from June 29, 2025 to June 19, 2026.

You can look forward to developing QI skills and participating in impactful training and projects. As a QI Fellow, you will:
  • Train in Quality Improvement methods (e.g., The Model for Improvement and Lean), Learning Health Systems, and participate in Anderson Center project reviews
  • Lead collaborative, cross-functional teams in executing high-impact projects that set the standards in healthcare improvement work.
  • Receive mentorship and coaching from Anderson Center leadership and Quality Improvement experts

About the James M. Anderson Center for Health Systems Excellence

The James M. Anderson Center for Health Systems Excellence was established to dramatically expand our work in transformational improvement, both within the Cincinnati Children's community and globally. Named in honor of the institution's former president and CEO, the Anderson Center shares ideas, knowledge, and data transparently and collaborates extensively to accelerate the reach and pace of our improvement. This is represented in our improvement efforts and support of 10+ Learning Heath Networks and creating leaders who will be the catalysts that transform the delivery of healthcare. Example Project Work
  • Develop and execute a strategy resulting in over 40% reduction in hospital acquired conditions across 145+ children's hospitals
  • Develop a framework to reduce kidney rejection and improve blood pressure control in pediatric patients at more than 40 hospitals, representing >61% of children receiving kidney transplants in the United States
  • Develop and execute a strategy to reconnect members of the community without a medical home resulting in an 89% care gap closure, 4% decrease in the number of members who had not received well child checks, and an 8% increase in care management enrollment
  • Plan and create content for National Learning Sessions, where clinicians, quality specialists, and members of the community collaborate to share and spread learnings

Candidate Criteria:
  • Strongly encourage applications from members of historically underrepresented groups broadly, and specifically within healthcare, such as diverse groups based on race, ethnicity, sexual orientation, and gender identity.
  • A strong candidate will:
    • Convey how experiences working with, caring for or serving populations different from themselves have impacted how they approach their work
    • Have experience with data analysis and interpretations skills (e.g., bachelor's or master's degree in healthcare, engineering, computer science or math is preferred)
    • Demonstrate aptitude and interest in Quality Improvement methodology and a passion for improvement
    • Be new to improvement science (0-2 years' experience)
    • Have experience running an improvement project, a component of an improvement project (e.g., RCA), or relevant improvement certification or course (e.g., Lean, Six Sigma, industry, RCIC)
