Position Summary
The position of Sergeant performs and provides direct supervision, support, and backup police and security officers in routine patrol, directed patrol, community policing, and special event activities. Reviews and assists officers as necessary on incident reports, accident reports, and any other such reports prepared by officers on a daily basis. Investigate and analyze crime. Ensures accuracy of all information on reports. Prepares routine and special reports as outlined in the Field Training Program. May be assigned as sergeant of specialized areas including, but not limited to, investigations, special events, training, and community relations. This position may be assigned to any shift day, evening, nights, and weekends and will protect life and property while safeguarding the rights and dignity of individuals.
Responsible for staff performance management. Also, defines objectives, priorities, and deadlines and is available to assist in resolving complaints about departmental services and problems. Train the College community regarding security, safety, and crime prevention issues. Foster trust and communication with the College community and other agencies.
Primary Position Responsibilities
- Supervise shift operations to include decision making and notification to Chief via chain of command
- Review and approve reports
- Monitor and evaluate performance of subordinates
- Direct Dispatch and Security personnel on tasks for shift operational efficiency

Basic Qualifications
- All candidates must have at least 7 years working as a police officer in a campus or university setting.
- Successful candidates must have at least 10 years of progressive and broad-based experience in directing and overseeing daily shift responsibilities and assignments in a Police setting or a Bachelor's Degree with 7 years law enforcement experience.
- All candidates must have attended and successfully completed a police academy allowing them to be licensed as a State Special Police Officer under Massachusetts General Law C. 22c Sec. 63.
Skills and Abilities Applicant must have completed a law enforcement academy approved by the Massachusetts Peace Officer Standards and Training Commission. Must show proof of graduation from an approved Police Academy. If diploma is from an out-of-state academy, transcripts of academy curriculum must also be submitted. Must be certifiable under Massachusetts General Law C. 22c Sec. 63, have or obtain a valid Massachusetts's driver's license prior to employment, be able to pass a physical exam and psychological evaluation, a rigid background investigation and hold a high school diploma or equivalency. All applicants must be at least twenty one (21) years of age, be a citizen of the United States, not have been convicted of or pleaded guilty to or entered a plea of nolo contendere to any felony charge or to any violation of any federal or state laws or city ordinances relating to force, violence, theft, dishonesty, gambling, liquor or controlled substances, not have been released or discharged under any other than honorable discharge from any of the armed forces of the United States, and have the person's fingerprints on file with the Massachusetts Bureau of Investigation. Ability to analyze situation quickly and to determine proper course of action. Ability to comprehend and carry out directives. Ability to successfully complete required annual in service training.
