Position Summary:

The Division of Geriatric Medicine in the Department of Medicine at the University of North Carolina School of Medicine at Chapel Hill is seeking applications for an open-rank, tenure-track position. Academic rank will be commensurate with qualifications and experience. The Division of Geriatric Medicine and the Center for Aging and Health are recognized national and global leaders in clinical care, research, and education in Geriatrics.

Ideal candidates are early-career faculty with a vision for building a research program complementary to the Division's strengths which include health promotion, geriatric syndromes, dementia, and deprescribing. Research opportunities range across epidemiology, clinical interventions, and implementation science. Faculty will receive strong mentorship and are expected to contribute to university and professional service activities. UNC's Health Affairs campus provides unique interdisciplinary research opportunities across the Schools of Medicine, Dentistry, Nursing, Pharmacy, Public Health, and Social Work. Additional resources include the NIH-funded Transitional and Clinical Sciences Institute, the Cecil Sheps Center for Health Services Research, the Howard W. Odum Institute for Research in Social Science, UNC Center for Aging and Health and the Lineberger Cancer Center, among others.

Clinical duties will be based at one or more sites, including the award-winning Eastowne Geriatrics Clinic, continuing care retirement communities, skilled nursing facilities, home care, and the Acute Care of the Elderly Inpatient Service.

Supported by organizations including the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA), the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), and the National Institute on Aging (NIA), our education and training programs include the NIA funded T-35 Medical Student Training in Aging Research (MSTAR) program, T-32 program in Geriatric Oncology and HRSA-funded Carolina Workforce Enhancement Program. Close collaboration with the Gillings School of Global Public Health and the Eshelman School of Pharmacy enhances research, teaching, and educational opportunities.

Our faculty are committed to innovations in care leading to better health outcomes and quality of life for the aging population. The Division of Geriatric Medicine is led by founding chief Jan Busby-Whitehead, MD. The Division and the Center consists of 22 primary, 2 joint, 4 geriatrics fellows and 5 adjunct faculty and 22 administrative and research staff members. During FY 2024, the Center for Aging and Health managed over $7 million dollars in sponsored research funding.

The Division of Geriatric Medicine trains future leaders in geriatric medicine to meet the healthcare needs of America's older adults. Together, our clinician-educators, medical students, residents, and fellows are bringing the latest geriatrics research into healthcare practice. Minimum Education and Experience Requirements:

MD with residency training in Internal Medicine and fellowship training in Geriatric Medicine

Board Certified/Board Eligible Geriatricians
