ABOUT THE JOB:
The Mental Health Consultant [MHC] is part of a multidisciplinary team that advises the staff of NYC Administration for Children's Services [ACS]. The MHC will assist ACS staff by providing information about the mental health issues faced by ACS clients, and recommendations about appropriate treatment and community service options for clients, who may be involved in cases which include abuse, maltreatment and/or neglect of children.

KEY ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Consult with Child Protective Specialists [CPS] about their specific mental health concerns.
  • • Work with other disciplines to provide cross-consultations when necessary.
  • • Meet weekly productivity requirements.
  • • Attend child safety and other conferences.
  • • Educate ACS staff, including frontline Child Protective Specialists and their supervisors, about adult mental health challenges.
  • • Model for ACS staff, effective strategies for engagement assessment and problem solving, through direct contact with ACS clients with CPS present.
  • • Develop and deliver trainings to ACS staff designed to improve their knowledge about adult mental health related issues
  • • Maintain clear and concise documentation in ACS Connections case records.
  • • Maintain the JB tracking log for requested and completed consults
  • • Work with Team Coordinator to create relationships with outside service providers
  • • Assist Team Coordinator in conducting ongoing needs assessments in the field office.
  • • Provide coverage for other offices as needed.
  • • Attend weekly supervision
  • • Work a hybrid schedule
  • Provide training to ACS staff in mental health assessment, diagnosis and service planning.
  • Other duties as assigned.
EDUCATIONAL / TRAINING REQUIRED:

  • Master in Social Work, LMSW / LCSW or Masters in Psychology with 3-5 years in the mental health field.
EXPERIENCE REQUIRED / LANGUAGE PREFERENCE:

  • Knowledge of the child welfare system preferred.
  • Strong knowledge of mental health and related issues.
  • Willingness to work the New York City Holiday schedule.
  • Domestic violence and / or substance knowledge helpful.
