Normal Work Schedule: Monday - Friday, 8:00am to 4:45pm

Job Summary: The Materials Characterization Specialist performs advanced operation of assigned instruments. Conducts specialized training on assigned instruments. Assists with interpretation of data from assigned instruments. These instruments include electron microscopes, focused ion beam microscopes, X-ray diffractometers, and similarly related instruments and ancillary specimen preparation equipment.

Additional Department Summary: The Materials Characterization Specialist is responsible for application and development of methodology for best practices sample preparation, diffraction and scattering methods, spectroscopy, and related analytical methods that advance the capabilities of facility instruments and their user base.

These duties require the Materials Characterization Specialist to excel in the interpretation of collected data; exploration and training of new analytical techniques and methods; and documentation of procedures for the use by others. The Materials Characterization Specialist engages users internal and external to UA in assisting or completing characterization tasks including, and not limited to, reports.

Required Minimum Qualifications: Bachelor's degree and two (2) years of experience in a research laboratory; OR master's degree and some experience in a research laboratory.

Preferred Qualifications: Master's degree and two (2) years of experience in a research laboratory; OR a PhD and some experience in a research laboratory. Experience in one or more of the following: maintenance and training of individuals in the advanced operation of characterization tools; experience in scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, and related electron microscopy; focus ion beam microscopy methods; atom probe tomography (APT); X-ray diffractometers and/or similar instrumentation.
