The Marketing Lab Manager will work closely with behavioral research faculty and graduate students from the Marketing Department to coordinate and conduct a diverse set of research studies.

The Lab Manager will oversee the day-to-day research being conducted in the lab, such as scheduling and supervising the running of online and in-lab studies, training and supervising research assistants, maintaining the Sona Systems subject pool database (posting and approving studies, recruiting subjects for studies, processing new-account and deactivation requests, managing participant credits for study participation), and ensuring data quality.

The ideal candidate is self-motivated, highly organized, extremely conscientious, and a good team player. Excellent social and communication skills are particularly important because much of this job is managing people (e.g., research participants, undergraduate RAs, PhD students, and the support and administrative staff in the Marketing Department). Some flexibility of schedule is also desirable, given the ebb and flow of the academic quarter (and student schedules).

A strong background in psychology and psychological research (or related fields, such as marketing, consumer behavior or organizational behavior) is preferred. Experience with Qualtrics, Excel, IRB processes, SPSS, SAS, and running research experiments of all kinds in the lab and field is preferred but not required.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Lab Operations Management:
    • Oversee daily operations of the Marketing Lab, ensuring high quality data collection, smooth research and teaching support.
    • Manage the scheduling and usage of the lab for faculty and PhD student research projects.
    • Ensure that all lab equipment, software, and resources are well-maintained and functioning properly.
  • Research Support:
    • Assist faculty and students with the design, execution, and analysis of marketing research projects.
    • Provide technical support for lab tools, including software for surveys, experiments, and data collection.
    • Train lab assistants on data collection protocols and users on lab procedures, equipment, and research software.
  • SONA System Management:
    • Administer the SONA system for participant recruitment and study scheduling.
    • Monitor studies within the SONA system to ensure efficient allocation of participants.
    • Provide technical support and training for faculty, students, and researchers using the SONA system.
    • Help manage participant credits and address issues related to participation or study credits.
  • Student Guidance for Missed Lab Sessions:
    • If students miss lab sessions for any reason, guide them in completing alternate assignments to meet course requirements.
    • Communicate with students and faculty to ensure alternate assignments are appropriate and completed on time.
  • Recruitment, Supervision & Training:
    • Recruit lab assistants from a pool of undergraduate students
    • Supervise lab assistants, graduate students, and other lab personnel.
    • Develop and maintain training materials to ensure lab users follow established procedures.
    • Provide ongoing training and support for all lab users.
  • Budget & Resource Management:
    • Manage the lab's budget, including tracking expenses for equipment, software, and staffing.
    • Collaborate with the IT/finance team for accurate budget reporting and resource allocation.
  • Compliance & Safety:
    • Ensure lab operations comply with university policies and research ethics guidelines.
    • Maintain proper safety protocols for equipment, research data, and participant confidentiality.
    • Maintain CITI certificate for human subjects research
  • Collaboration & Communication:
    • Act as the primary point of contact for lab operations, coordinating between faculty, students, and the department.
    • Maintain clear communication with all stakeholders involved in research projects.
  • Continuous Improvement:
    • Propose and implement strategies to enhance lab efficiency and optimize resources.
    • Stay up to date on marketing research tools and technology to improve lab offerings.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in marketing, Business, Psychology, or a related field; master's degree preferred.
  • Prior experience managing a lab, research center, or similar facility.
  • Familiarity with marketing research methodologies, tools, and participant management systems (e.g., SONA).
  • Excellent organizational, communication, and project management skills.
  • Strong technical aptitude and ability to troubleshoot equipment and software issues.
  • Experience supervising staff and managing budgets.
  • A relevant combination of education and experience may be considered

Preferred Skills:

  • Experience working in an academic or research setting.
  • Knowledge of data privacy and research ethics.
  • Familiarity with marketing software tools such as Qualtrics, SPSS, and other survey or analytics platforms.
  • Experience with IRB (Institutional Review Board) processes
  • Experience administering the SONA system or similar participant management systems.
