Position Title: Instructor - Adult Basic Education (Temporary, Part-Time, up to 19.5 hours per week)

Rate of Pay: $25.49/hour

Position Summary:

Adult Education Instructor applicants will be considered for part-time, temporary teaching opportunities. Class schedules vary, including synchronous classes Monday - Thursday, 9 am to 12 pm or 5:30 pm to 8:30, pm as well as asynchronous classes.

This position will work primarily at one of the three Adult Learning Centers with the possibility of working at times at a campus and community sites. Our students come to the program seeking High School Equivalency diplomas, English skills, and preparation for college and career. Classes may be subject-specific or multi-subject, with almost all classes being multi-level groups of up to 35 students. Although each class is focused on a core subject, such as math or Language Arts, instructors are expected to integrate College and Career Readiness (CCR) content such as time management, technology, civics, and soft skills to support all students in achieving their short and long-term goals. All instruction is expected to be standards-based, student-centered, and CCR-contextualized to ensure the classes are rigorous, pertinent, and meaningful for students. Content for mid-level and upper-level classes must also be contextualized to one of three career sectors.

About Adult Education

Pima Community College Adult Basic Education for College and Career (ABECC) provides community members of Pima County with a comprehensive Adult Education program. Classes and services include Adult Basic and Secondary Education, English Language Acquisition for Adults, Citizenship, Civics, and Student Leadership, Refugee Education, and more.

This is a grant-funded position and continuation of employment is contingent upon renewed funding. Ideal candidates will be considered for part-time positions at variable hours and locations, as available.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Deliver instruction to students using a variety of virtual, in-person, hyflex or asynchronous/online methods; adjust teaching styles to meet the needs of a diverse student population using adult learning theory/principles and content knowledge in math, writing, reading, science and social studies.
  • Prepare instructional materials, lesson plans, and classroom presentations in support of students achieving educational goals.
  • Design and implement high-quality curriculum and instruction for adult learners that is flexible, student-centered, standards-based, rigorous, and contextualized. Integrate CCR skills, computer literacy, and civics
  • Administer formative assessments
  • Complete accurate and timely data collection and reporting
  • Facilitate student persistence with individualized support
  • Establish and maintain a classroom environment conducive to student learning
  • Adjust learning options for individuals with special needs, physical, and/or psychological differences
  • Set up/break down classrooms or other physical activities related specifically to the subject being taught
  • Provide counsel regarding student discipline issues to create positive outcomes
  • Perform other duties of a similar nature or level as required
  • Assess student needs and goals; determine student placement in the program; evaluate student skills; and, assess student progress for program continuation or completion
  • Conduct orientation meetings for students
  • Facilitate goal-setting activities with students to set and monitor goal achievement
  • Provide referrals for students to internal departments and external agencies and organizations to assist students in meeting their needs
  • Engage in collaborative professional learning and continuing education to facilitate student achievement
  • Write communications such as student contracts, letters of reference, and nomination letters for honor societies and scholarships
Job Requirements:
  • Bachelor's degree and
  • Two years of related experience instructing adults and
  • Arizona Department of Education Adult Education teacher certification or the ability to obtain the certification within sixty days of date of hire
Or
  • An equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential duties of the job such as those listed above

  • Adult Basic Education instruction
  • Adult learning theory, principles, and methods
  • Non-traditional, student-centered approaches to instruction; maintain cohesive, multi-level diverse groups
  • Strong content knowledge in math, writing, and reading
  • Use technology to support classroom instruction and other job-related duties
  • Experience in teaching at-risk and multicultural adult or high school populations
  • Arizona Adult Basic Education and College and Career Readiness standards; state and national guidelines
  • Communication and interpersonal skills as applied to interaction with students, co-workers, supervisors, and the general public
  • Work in a collaborative environment
  • Curriculum development
  • Instructional material evaluation and selection techniques
  • Evaluate student progress through GED practice testing and TABE testing
  • Strategies to incorporate current issues as a method of instruction
  • College structure, systems, and processes
  • Strategies and tools for career navigation and exploration
  • Prepare a variety of reports
Physical Requirements:

Positions in this class typically require: talking, hearing, seeing, repetitive motions, and fine finger movements - using the fingers to manipulate/handle objects such as typing, sorting papers, activating buttons, or sorting/separating small parts.

Medium Work: Exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up-to 20 pounds of force frequently, and/or up-to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects.

Moving about on foot to accomplish tasks, particularly for long periods or moving from one work site to another.
