Department Information
University Collections (UC), which is a part of IU Research, was created in 2018 to ensure proper stewardship of library, museum, and archival collections throughout the Indiana University system. In 2022, UC opened University Collections at McCalla, a combination exhibition, event, and teaching space that supports IU¿s many collections, student and faculty creative works, and community collaborations.
Job Summary
Department-Specific Responsibilities
- Responsible for the creation and design of graphics for UC events and programs, including exhibition openings, receptions, film screenings, outreach events, campus events, and lectures for the public and for specialized donor events.
- Designs the layout and format for digital and print graphic design content, including selection of colors, images, fonts, logos, sizing, and placement, for various needs, audiences, and platforms.
- Works closely with University Collections leadership and with vendors to coordinate different departmental graphic needs, including overseeing the logistics of graphics ordering and interaction with vendors, including preparing specifications and obtaining estimates for final approval.
- Coordinates all administrative aspects of production, including preparing final designs for presentation, checking and approving color, copy, text format separations, and scaling images for print production.
- Other duties as assigned.
General Responsibilities
- Identifies basic and complex graphic design projects and performs research, conceptualizes design, sets timeline, and designs visual elements for use in a variety of marketing and communications needs, adhering to IU brand guidelines.
- Regularly consults with marketing and communications staff and other key stakeholders to determine project needs and ensure graphic design elements align with strategy and objectives.
- Designs the layout and format for digital and print graphic design content, including selection of colors, images, fonts, logos, and placement, for various marketing and communications needs, audiences, and platforms; may delegate basic design tasks to Graphic Design Assistant(s).
- Creates images, graphic elements, illustrations, and other visual content using a variety of graphic software, including Adobe Creative Suite and PowerPoint; takes on special and/or urgent projects.
- Seeks input from peers and stakeholders on a variety of graphic design elements to evaluate effectiveness of different aesthetics, colors, fonts, images, etc.
- May provide organizational training on graphic design methodology and strategy.
- May provide guidance to Graphic Design Assistants.
QualificationsCombinations of related education and experience may be considered. Education beyond the minimum required may be substituted for work experience. Work experience beyond the minimum required may be substituted for education.
EDUCATION
Required- Bachelor's degree in graphic design, art, or related field
WORK EXPERIENCE
Required- 2 years in relevant field

Preferred
- Knowledge or experience in a gallery or museum setting preferred
- Proficient in the Microsoft Office suite of software, Internet, and standard office equipment
- Strong working knowledge of printing, publishing, and/or graphics art procedures and related computer software. Should be proficient in programs available via Adobe Creative Cloud, such as Photoshop, InDesign, and Illustrator
Working Conditions / DemandsThis role requires the ability to effectively communicate and to operate a computer and other standard office productivity equipment. The position involves sedentary work as well as periods of time moving around an office environment and the campus. The person in this role must be able to perform the essential functions with or without an accommodation.
