The Global Research Institute (GRI) empowers teams of William & Mary students and faculty to make a difference in the world. We are a multidisciplinary hub that applies scholarly research to real world problems, investing in outstanding student and faculty scholars to catalyze new insights and cultivate the next generation of global leaders. Based in the Office of the Provost, GRI supports a whole of university approach to advance W&M by developing ideas, convening partners, creating and analyzing data, and inventing new methods. The Institute's approach to incubate and scale and applied research helps researchers push research frontiers and produce insights that matter at W&M and beyond. At any time, under the auspices of the Institute there are several research projects, most grant-funded, with the largest being AidData.

AidData produces novel data, tools, and research that answers the question: who is funding, what, where, for whom, and to what effect around the world? AidData has an explicit focus on data and research that meets high academic standards but is also accessible and relevant for a broad audience of international relations practitioners, policymakers, journalists, and scholars. AidData's work is made possible by generous financial support of international organizations such as the World Bank and United Nations, private philanthropies such as the Hewlett and Gates Foundations, and government agencies such as the US Department of State and USAID.

Position Summary:

AidData is seeking a versatile Geospatial Analyst to join its team.
Responsibilities include:

  • Supporting interdisciplinary research projects
  • Developing workflows to transform remotely sensed imagery and open-source data into insights on socio-ecological and environmental issues
  • Programming and implementing geospatial workflows with rigorous testing and documentation
  • Contributing to reports and peer-reviewed articles
  • Researching and advising on new technologies and techniques
  • Supporting external funding efforts, from proposal conceptualization to data collection, analysis, geo-visualization, and dissemination.
The Geospatial Analyst will work closely with the Senior Geospatial Scientist. This position is based in Williamsburg, Virginia.Conditions of Employment:

This is a non-exempt position, eligible to receive overtime in accordance with the Fair Labor Standards Act. This position may be subject to overtime during high peak times, etc. as directed and approved by the supervisor.This is a restricted position. Continued employment is subject to funding availability.

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's Degree in computer science, geography, remote sensing, or natural resource discipline with substantive coursework in geospatial programming and analysis or equivalent experience.
  • Proficient in scripting languages such as JavaScript, Python, R, etc., for automated processing and analysis/modeling of geospatial data.
  • Expertise in processing, analyzing, and modeling within enterprise geospatial software applications like Esri ArcGIS Pro and open-source software packages (QGIS).
  • Fundamental and advanced applied knowledge of geospatial data, methods, and science across disciplines.
  • Proven ability to work effectively with cross-functional teams in a fast-paced dynamic environment.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication.
Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master's Degree in computer science, geography, remote sensing, or natural resource discipline with substantive coursework in geospatial programming and analysis.
  • Demonstrated experience with Google Earth Engine tools/application development.
  • Experience working with various types of airborne/satellite imagery to assess, map, monitor, and inventory natural resources.
  • Familiarity with household survey methods and protocols.
  • Experience in geospatial programming and analysis.

Advertised Pay Range:

Up to $62,000

All hiring rates are commensurate with relevant experience up to the advertised amount considering internal alignment.
