Job Summary

  • Provides operational management and oversight of laboratory animal staff, facilities, and activities; identifies operational issues and/or areas of improvement and implements solutions to improve procedures, processes and/or efficiency.
  • Develops and maintains operating procedures and guidelines for animal care staff and facility users; ensures compliance per IACUC and other regulatory agencies; develops and enforces procedures to ensure current and continued compliance with regulations; maintains compliance-related records, information, and/or reports.
  • Ensures adequate staffing and effective scheduling; participates and informs employment decisions for assigned staff; analyzes, monitors, and evaluates performance of assigned staff; establishes work priorities, conducts performance reviews, and provides corrective action as needed.
  • Plans and optimizes use of laboratory animal resources (staff, facilities, equipment); optimizes space utilization and approves all facility renovations.
  • Provide guidance and regulatory oversight to animal care staff and facility users, including researchers and theirassigned technical research staff.
  • Assesses performance gaps and training needs; provides training to assigned staff to improve laboratory animal operations; researches and identifies development opportunities for assigned staff.
  • Analyzes needs, forecasts trends, develops and manages budgets, and approves expenditures; participates in the development of animal per diem rates, and oversees various studies for financial analysis; may participate in seeking and securing external funding in support of operations, including drafting grant proposals and budgets.
  • Supervises the procurement of laboratory animals for research projects from outside vendors and institutions in accordance with all government regulations and campus policies; leads decisions on products and vendors best suited to researcher's needs; manages and oversees procurement and inventory control of all equipment, feed, bedding, and husbandry supplies.
  • Contributes to the development of departmental policies, procedures, and processes related to animal husbandry; participates in training and implementation of standard operating procedures; conducts informational research to ensure compliance with all regulatory and campus policies; develops and delivers papers and presentations to related professional associations and groups on behalf of the university as requested/needed.

Combinations of related education and experience may be considered. Education beyond the minimum required may be substituted for work experience. Work experience beyond the minimum required may be substituted for education.

EDUCATION

Required
  • Bachelor's degree preferably in related scientific field
WORK EXPERIENCE

Required
  • 2 years of lab animal technician and supervisory/lead technician experience
Preferred
  • 5 years of related experience in the field of laboratory animal science and/or animal facility management
LICENSES AND CERTIFICATES

Required
  • Valid driver's license and ability to be insured by Indiana University upon date of hire
  • AALAS Laboratory Animal Technician (LAT) certification (2nd level or higher) upon date of hire
  • AALAS Laboratory Animal Technologist (LATG) certification within 1 year from date of hire

Working Conditions / Demands

The role regularly requires the ability to effectively communicate. The role frequently requires the ability to move about the work environment and to position oneself to operate laboratory equipment effectively. The role requires the ability to move objects weighing up to 25 pounds and will occasionally work near moving mechanical parts. The person in this role must be able to perform the essential functions with or without an accommodation.
