Job Summary
The FLUdetect study aims to profile acute viral infection and immune dynamics through monthly and post-infection blood draws. We are seeking a skilled Phlebotomist to support the FLUdetect study at the Institute for Genomic Biology. The role involves performing venipuncture blood draws from participants aged 18 or older, preparing and labeling blood samples for further analysis, and maintaining a sanitary work area.

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Perform venipuncture blood draws from study participants who are 18 years or older. Draw quality blood samples and prepare specimens following established practices and procedures.
  • Explain blood draw procedures to patients and answer any questions about the process.
  • Create an atmosphere of trust and confidence while explaining procedures to patients and drawing blood specimens skillfully, safely, and accurately.
  • Prepare patients before drawing blood.
  • Gather medical testing materials, including needles, sample vials, blood storage bags, and test tubes .
  • Verify patient information and label blood samples properly. Accurately update patient information in the REDcap database.
Additional Physical Demands
Blood draws carried out from potentially infected individuals and result in exposure to infectious materials. Proper safety protocols must be maintained.

Minimum Qualifications

A diploma from a phlebotomy course and phlebotomy experience from previous employment (minimum of 2 years) is required.

Preferred Qualifications

More than five years of Venipuncture experience.

  • Ability to work with potential infectious agents and obtain safety training.
  • Strong attention to detail and organizational skills.
  • Excellent communication skills and the ability to work effectively in a team.
  • Ability to handle potentially infectious materials and adhere to safety protocols.
Rate of Pay:

The rate of pay for Extra Help Phlebotomist - Carl R Woese Institute for Genomic Biology positions start at $22.00 per hour and increases based on level of work. The rate of pay is determined by the job description submitted by the department.

Work Schedule:

We offer short or long-term assignments up to 900 hours, which is about 6-months of full-time work. Employees can work either full or partial days and full or partial weeks.

Extra Help Positions:

Extra Help employees are appointed to fulfill casual or emergent needs within units. The amount of time for which services are needed is not usually predictable and payment for work performed is on an hourly basis and based on actual hours worked. Extra Help employees do not receive holiday pay or paid sick or vacation leave.

Extra Help employees are required by State Universities Civil Service System rules to take a 30-calendar-day break after working 900 hours. At the end of the 30 days, you may begin another 900-hour employment cycle in a new position if available. Working Extra Help will in no way affect any other employment opportunities with the University of Illinois, including your position on and Civil Service register.
