The Role

The engineer in this role will be working in department E11 focusing on the electrical distribution system for advanced submarine propulsion concepts and designs including those for SSN(X). The primary responsibilities include:

Cross-disciplinary Collaboration:

Regularly interact with other disciplines within E11 and across related departments to establish electrical distribution system requirements informed by first principles physics and previous platform requirements.

Technical Analysis:

Perform electrical load flow studies, fault analyses, and excursion studies to ensure system integrity and performance under various operational conditions.

Component/System Trade Studies:

Conduct trade studies to evaluate different components and systems, considering factors like efficiency, reliability, cost, size, weight, power density, specific power, etc. Consider their impact to whole ship parameters including stealth, operational availability, ship's payload, ship's speed, and overall cost.

Documentation and Reporting:

Prepare detailed technical reports and documentation including results of analyses and trade studies, design recommendations, and system specifications for customer approval. Ensure compliance of resulting designs with applicable regulations, program goals/requirements, industry best practices, and engineering safety standards.

Vendor Management:

Regularly interact with vendors to understand new capabilities and manage component based studies to inform system trade-studies and support later system integration.

Researches, develops, designs, and tests electrical components, equipment, systems, and networks. Designs electrical equipment, facilities, components, products, and systems for commercial, industrial, and domestic purposes.

Must Have

Bachelor's Degree and 5 years of relevant exempt experience;
Master's Degree and 3 years of relevant professional experience;
Ph.D. and 0 years of experience.

Newport News Shipbuilding requires a Bachelor's Degree in engineering from an ABET accredited program.

Nice to Have

-Optimistic and can do attitude to produce complex technical engineering products.
-Experience presenting complex technical information to customers at Naval Nuclear Laboratories (NNL) and Naval Reactors (NR).
-Experience designing engineering products for the Naval Nuclear Propulsion Program (NNPP).
-Willingness to mentor and teach new engineers in both a technical and programmatic capacity.
-Experience performing physics based modeling and simulation analysis for notional electrical power plant designs (i.e., load flow studies,
fault analysis, stability analysis).
-Experience with software modeling tools such as Matlab/Simulink, ETAP, EasyPower, Paladin, ANSYS, etc.
-Experience with power systems using both traditional and contemporary power electronics conversion equipment (AC/AC, AC/DC, DC/AC, and DC/DC).
-Control systems design experience relative to electrical power generation, distribution, and transmission.
