Purpose of Position

This is a part-time, non-benefited position. Only UND students are eligible to be hired in this position.

The Community Assistant (CA) is a student staff member who lives within an undergraduate or graduate residence hall, apartment style housing, or apartment community. CAs are primarily responsible for providing support and assistance to these communities through their work. The CA advises hall government/community council, plans and implements social and educational programs, and serves as an advocate, leader, role model, resource and referral person for the students and staff members within their on-campus communities. The CA also serves in an on-call coverage rotation and assists the Resident Director (RD) with specific tasks in the administrative operation of the community. The CA is a staff member of Housing & Residence Life, a subdivision of Student Affairs and reports to a Resident Director (RD).

Duties & Responsibilities
  • The Community Assistant position is a student leader position responsible for providing support and assistance to a Resident Director (RD) within a residence hall, apartment style housing, or on-campus apartment community. The CA assists the RD with specific duties in the operation of their communities. These include:
    • Assisting with the coordination and implementation of hall, area, and campus-wide programming initiatives
    • Serving as an advisor for Hall Government/Community Council through student leadership development, attendance at meetings, budget tracking and event planning
    • Tracking RA/RM programming requirements and budget
    • Coordinating and overseeing the RA/RM on-duty/desk schedule
    • Conducting monthly key audits
    • Assisting in building occupancy and facility management
    • Completing monthly/semesterly community-wide administrative safety inspections and furniture inventories
    • Serving office hours and being available to residents on a daily basis
    • Assisting in communicating with residents through one-on-one conversations, building-wide messaging, electronic newsletter content development, and/or hall social media presence
    • Assisting in facilitating training and staff development programs
    • Serving on departmental collateral committees
    • Attending one-on-one meetings, weekly staff meetings and monthly all staff meetings
    • Participating in a campus-wide duty rotation
    • Assisting with Housing & Residence Life and Admissions events to promote on-campus living to current and incoming students
    • Participating in ongoing constructive evaluation of the Community Assistant program, residence life procedures, and personal job performance
  • The CA position is based on a twenty-hour work week. This will fluctuate from week to week based on the variable nature of the job tasks. The position is demanding in time and effort, and availability is a large part of being a successful CA. A work week is typically defined as Sunday through Saturday. CAs are responsible for managing their work week. More specifically, this position involves:
    • One hour (1), designated for a weekly 1:1 meeting with your supervisor.
    • Two hours (2), designated for weekly staff meeting at a time to be determined by your RD.
    • Three hours (3), designated for weekly hall government/community council co-advising.
    • Two hours (2), designated for departmental staff or collateral meetings.
    • Five hours (5), designated for posted office hours and administration responsibilities
  • Tasks that may be completed during office hours include occupancy management, health & safety inspections, furniture inventory, fire & safety equipment inventory, incident reports, fire drill reports/evaluations, and other administrative tasks
    • Seven hours (7), designated as community building responsibilities
    • Responsibilities may include planning and hosting residential curriculum hall/area programs, hosting floor/hall meetings, assisting with theme meal programming, participating in living learning community initiatives, residential curriculum requirement tracking, and assisting with new or current student outreach events, etc.
    • On call responsibility on a rotating basis. Duty phone is picked up & turned on Sun-Thu, 4:30 pm-8:00 am and Fri-Sun, 4:30 pm-4:30 pm. While on call, the CA is not restricted to campus, but must be able to respond to a call within 15 minutes

Minimum Requirements
  • Enrolled in a minimum if 1 credit for the employed academic semester
  • Successful completion of a Criminal History Background Check
  • Must hold and maintain a cumulative and semester GPA of 2.50 or above
  • Must have served in the Resident Assistant or Resident Manager position for at least two consecutive semesters prior to employment
  • Must be in good conduct standing at the start of their employment. In addition, CAs are expected to abide by all federal, state, and local laws; abide by the rules and regulations of the University of North Dakota, the Division of Student Affairs, and those of the Department of Housing & Residence Life
  • May not hold outside employment, internship, CFI, or student teach during their term of employment
  • Must meet the residence hall, apartment style housing, or apartment lease eligibility requirement and reside in assigned on-campus housing assignment throughout the terms of their employment
