Position Overview:

The Business Development Manager (BDM) works within the Capital Projects Department and has responsibility and accountability for the successful development and management of assigned projects. The BDM leads project teams from initiation to Concept Selection (FEL2A). The BDM is the owner of the project's Business Case for the lifecycle of the project (project initiation through turnover to Operations) and is responsible and accountable for ensuring that a project meets business objectives, are aligned with the Capital Business Plan, and that Sponsors and Stakeholders are aligned with the project drivers, objectives and proposed scope of work.

The BDM works closely with Sponsors, Business Teams, multiple disciplines (Operations, Discipline Engineering, Process Safety Management, Project Engineering, Environmental, and Economics & Scheduling) to define the Business Case, develop project scope, develop project deliverables, and evaluate alternatives via comparative economics and risk analysis.

Responsibilities:

  • Lead Project Framing sessions.
  • Work with Project Process Engineering to identify alternative scopes.
  • Set priorities for the Front End Development team to meet project objectives and Capital Plan.
  • Utilizes economic modelling to compare project alternatives.
  • Coordinate sponsor and stakeholder alignment.
  • Create Project Premise documents.
  • Create and obtain approval of the Concept Select package.
  • Lead Business and Engineering Alignment Sessions (BEAM).
  • Work with PM/PE to develop schedules, estimates, and staffing plans for FEL1.
  • Create funding documents through FEL2 (decision support packages including Opportunity/Investment Proposals, Executive Summaries, PowerPoint presentations).
  • Lead routine project meetings and reviews.

Experience and Qualifications:

Required Education and Experience:
  • 10+ years of experience working in an engineering or projects role at a refining or chemicals facility
  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering or in a related field
  • Understanding of how to manage critical knowledge and information to Stakeholders
  • Excellent organizational and planning skills
  • Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills

Preferred Education and Experience:
  • 5+ years interaction/exposure to Stage-Gate Capital Project Processes

Physical Requirements:
  • Physical ability to work around and on industrial equipment, including frequent climbing of stairs and ladders
  • Ability to wear Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) in designated areas (respirator, hard hat, safety glasses, gloves, heeled boots, and hearing protection)
