ASSISTANT PROFESSOR - THEATRE PERFORMANCE
Ithaca College

Ithaca, New York
$0.00 - $100.00 per hour

Situated in the beautiful Finger Lake region of New York, the Ithaca College School of Music, Theatre, and Dance invites applications for a tenure eligible appointment at the rank of Assistant Professor of Theatre Performance to begin Fall 2025. We value the input of multiple viewpoints and perspectives across the college; our goal is to create an equitable and inclusive academic community. Members of underrepresented groups whose exclusion has been longstanding, and who have demonstrated a commitment to minoritized communities in their teaching, service, and/or research, are strongly encouraged to apply.

Position Description:

The successful candidate will teach assigned classes at the undergraduate level in beginning to advanced levels of acting practice, acting for the camera, and audition techniques/career preparation. In addition, the successful applicant would have secondary areas of expertise in two or more of the following: integrated voice and movement, movement for actors, stage combat, voice and speech, voiceover work, and/or directing.

In addition to classroom teaching, opportunities may exist for the candidate to contribute as a stage director in the production season and/or as the annual B.F.A. senior showcase. Faculty participate in department life by auditioning prospective students, advising majors, and serving on committees in shared governance. Ongoing scholarly, creative, and professional activity will be expected and supported.

We seek individuals who share our commitment to embrace inclusive ideas and practices in all they do - from materials, current events and history taught in courses, to de-colonizing the curriculum, our production season, and our points of view towards admissions, recruitment, and retention. Furthermore, we seek colleagues whose methods and pedagogy incorporate consent-forward practices.

Qualifications:

A terminal degree in an appropriate or related discipline (such as an M.F.A. in acting, performance, or directing) and a record of professional activity in film and television performance is required. Demonstrable potential for successful college-level teaching within the context of an interdisciplinary and immersive liberal arts education is preferred.

About Us: The Ithaca College Center for Theatre and Dance, housed within the School of Music, Theatre, and Dance, combines conservatory style training with a broad education in the liberal arts. Degree programs include four B.F.A. pre-professional programs (acting, musical theatre, stage management, and theatre production & design), a B.S. in theatre administration, a B.A. in theatre studies, and minors in Theater or Dance. The Center is consistently ranked among the top undergraduate programs in the nation by The Princeton Review and is accredited by the National Association of Schools of Theatre (NAST). Our robust production season includes plays, musicals, dance, and opera in three venues housed in the Dillingham Center for the Performing Arts.

Our learning community is committed to significant actions fostering conscientious, accessible, and antiracist practices, curriculum, and policies, so marginalized voices are amplified and LGBTQIA+ identities are valued and represented. Our culture, decision-making, and communications are led by shared governance, accountability, transparency, and representation, towards a goal of meaningful, impactful change.

Application Instructions:

Review of applications will begin October 16, 2024. Apply online and submit your current CV and professional resume, along with names and contact information for five academic and/or professional references. In addition, please submit a cover letter (not to exceed 1500 words) highlighting your contributions to diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging, as well as consent-forward approaches, through your professional activity and teaching experience, and covering the following topics:

  • Considering the needs of a graduating student as they enter the acting profession, describe your experience teaching at all levels of acting practice, acting for the camera, and audition techniques.
  • Include details about your secondary areas of expertise as mentioned above in the position description.
