Department Summary

The College of Health and Public Service (HPS) at the University of North Texas, distinguished as one of the few Tier One research universities designated as a Hispanic-Serving Institution (HSI), prepares graduates to address diverse and complex social issues such as aging, disability, disaster management and recovery, criminal justice, health disparities, and public safety, and find solutions to challenges in public administration, public health, and urban planning. We have seven academic departments with undergraduate and graduate programs, the Center for Public Management, the UNT Speech and Hearing Center, UNT Workplace Inclusion & Sustainable Employment (WISE) and a number of professional development and clinical training programs to facilitate careers to address a global society.

HPS students are trained to lead nonprofits, become educators, researchers and professionals who strengthen the diverse communities we serve with thoughtful, inclusive and equitable practices as audiologists, behavior analysts, city managers, emergency managers, health care administrators, public safety administrators, public health specialists, rehabilitation counselors, speech language pathologists, social workers, urban planners and more.

Located within HPS, the Department of Public Administration offers a nationally ranked NASPAA-accredited Master of Public Administration program and the Ph.D. program in Public Administration and Management. The department, which has a long tradition of local community engagement, also offers undergraduate degrees in Nonprofit Leadership Studies and Urban Policy and Planning, as well as an undergraduate minor in Public Administration. With thirteen faculty and two staff members, the department is an active unit that values student service, externally funded research, and engaging community stakeholders to support the public good. The department also houses the Center for Public Management to support our academic and community engagement missions.

UNT has a highly diverse campus with a wide range of languages spoken in addition to English. We welcome candidates who have experience with HSI/MSIs and/or who speak Spanish, Vietnamese, American Sign Language, Chinese (Cantonese, Mandarin and other variations), Arabic, Tagalog, Farsi, French, or/and Yoruba.

Position Overview

The Department of Public Administration at the University of North Texas, Denton, Texas, invites applications for a tenure-track faculty position in the areas of state and local government, public budgeting, and financial management at the assistant professor level beginning in August 2025. This is a full-time, benefits-eligible, nine-month faculty position. Candidates should have a demonstrated record of effective teaching and research in areas of state and local government and public financial administration. Relevant teaching responsibilities are primarily in the department's NASPAA accredited MPA program and the Ph.D. program in Public Administration and Management, and across the department's two undergraduate degrees in nonprofit leadership studies and urban policy and planning.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Ph.D. in public administration, public affairs, or other related discipline and have relevant teaching experience.
  • Candidates must be able to contribute to teaching both online and face-to-face in the areas of local public budgeting and financial management.
  • Candidates have a clear research agenda underway and demonstrate strong potential for securing and executing externally funded research.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Familiarity with the expectations of the core requirements in NASPAA accredited programs is a plus.
  • In addition to publishing in highly regarded and respected journals, the candidate may have research interests that will contribute to the applied research and professional development activities in the Department's Center for Public Management.
