Job Description:


Binghamton University seeks applicants for a full-time, tenure-track Assistant Professor position in the Theatre Department's burgeoning musical theatre BFA program. The ideal candidate will have achieved distinction as a voice teacher, vocal pedagogue, and/or musical theatre performer/teaching artist, and will continue their creative research as they work towards tenure and promotion.


Binghamton offers both a Bachelor of Fine Arts in musical theatre and a Bachelor of Arts in theatre with concentrations in acting/directing, design/tech, and dance. The BFA in musical theatre is a four-year progression of classes that gives students a foundation in acting, singing, and dancing: the three skills at the heart of this art form. Because Binghamton students are notable for their high-achieving academic record, students in both programs seek to explore dramaturgical and artistic depth. In addition to performance courses in a wide range of techniques, students audition for main stage and studio productions ranging from the classical to the contemporary, including musicals, plays, and dance productions.


The successful applicant will teach approximately 12 hours of lessons per week, including studio voice lessons and vocal technique for musical theatre students. This requires an effective vocal technician invested in the success of their students through teaching healthy and science-based technique and who has the ability to connect with students from a variety of racial, ethnic, cultural, and gender identities. The position will require attendance at occasional rehearsals, teaching or co-teaching regular workshops as part of a weekly seminar series, and coordination of administrative responsibilities related to vocal offerings, in addition to fulfilling other service obligations, recruitment, and community outreach as appropriate to a tenure-track appointment. This person may also teach other courses depending upon their specialties and areas of interest.


We seek applicants who would demonstrate the following in their teaching and artistic practice:


  • Inclusive teaching and mentorship that will help make singing and musical theatre accessible to a broad range of students
  • Empowering all gender identities and expressions, including trans and non-binary singers
  • The ability to provide students with objective, supportive critique and actionable feedback
  • Expertise in vocal health
  • Ability to work with singers across many musical styles relevant to the current musical theatre landscape
  • A commitment to the collaborative process, including with students, colleagues, and other artistic team members
  • Development of a national or international reputation as a practitioner and/or scholar

The ideal candidate will be an artist and/or scholar whose teaching, creative activity, and professional experience will contribute to the diversity, equity, access, and inclusivity goals of the Department of Theatre and seek to address questions of interest to historically under-represented or underserved communities. Their research agenda should support and enhance the Department's offerings by increasing its range, depth, and diversity of curriculum, with the goal of leading to successful tenure.


Salary: 77, 000 +DOE



Requirements:


Required Qualities:


  • Master's degree (MM, MVP, MFA, MA) or other relevant advanced degree, awarded by August 18, 2025
  • Knowledge in and demonstrated application of contemporary vocal science research, vocal technique, and vocal pedagogy
  • Knowledge of current trends in musical theatre and musical theatre-adjacent performance styles, techniques, and performance practices
  • Demonstrated success teaching college students and/or professional performers
  • Experience teaching singing in the diverse repertoire and styles common in contemporary musical theatre (such as pop, rock, classical, soul, jazz, funk, R&B, hip-hop, rap, country, etc.)

Preferred Qualities:


  • Additional training in vocal pedagogy as it relates to musical theatre and/or contemporary commercial music
  • Previous university-level teaching experience
  • Sufficient piano skills in order to facilitate private voice lessons without the assistance of an accompanist
  • A research or creative portfolio that will help the candidate progress towards tenure, whether that be in performance, publication, production, or another research field
