Position Summary:

The primary purpose of the Assistant Track and Field Coach is to play an integral role in the effective operation of the track and field program, responsible for supporting the recruitment, development, and retention efforts of men and women in the North Central College track and field philosophy. The assistant track and field coach will also work with the Director and Assistant/Associate Directors of Athletics helping further develop, implement, and evaluate components of departmental athletic events and leadership programs.

Description of Key Responsibilities:

1. Assist in development, recruitment, and support of a highly competitive men's and women's track and field program, consistent with the student-athlete philosophy of Division III, which generates College and community enthusiasm and support.

2. Primary coach of pole vault OR jumps, organize standard practices and develop individual athletes in those events.

3. Design and implement event specific programs in‐season, off‐season, and pre‐season for all event areas in a manner that reflects research‐driven practices. Supervision of student athletes. Work in conjunction with other coaches to develop event-specific training plans.

4. Work in cooperation with the sports medicine or athletic training staff in the
rehabilitation and strengthening of injured athletes.

5. Help develop practice preparations, in conjunction with the entire coaching staff, by analyzing film, designing strategies, communicating with the student-athletes in the specialty area and writing reports.

6. Collaborate with the track and field coaches and program with meet management, effective use of coaching staff, recruitment showcases and strategies, efficient use of financial resources and funding for shared transportation, equipment, and physical plant improvements.

7. Develop and implement an on-going professional development plan as it relates to track and field in general, wellness, nutrition, and overall strength and conditioning

8. Knowledge of institutional, CCIW, NCAA, and compliance rules and policies.

9. Participate in any promotional activities for the track and field program including the Faculty Mentor Program, Parent's and Senior Day activities, Alumni track and field meet and associated activities, fund-raisers during the academic year, summer camps, and other marketing and promotional activities.

10. Coach a variety of event groups, organize standard practices, and develop individual athletes.

11. Perform other administrative duties as assigned.

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

1. Specific knowledge of track and field coaching theories and techniques.

2. Skill in communicating with college student-athletes, their parents and other coaching professionals. Ability to effectively recruit qualified student-athletes. Ability to effectively counsel and advise prospective students and their parents regarding numerous aspects of the College. Ability to exercise the proper balance of persistence and patience as individually appropriate to each contact.

3. Strong commitment to a small college environment. Extensive knowledge of the organization and operation of the College, both administratively and academically, especially regarding admission-related activities. Up-to-date knowledge of developments in higher education in general and at schools with which North Central College traditionally competes for new students.

4. Ability to develop successful programs which engage student-athletes and coaches in developing student-athlete leaders.

5. Ability to deal with several tasks and work with a large number of individuals concurrently, often without direct supervision. This requires a person who is well organized, detail oriented, flexible and able to effectively prioritize tasks.

6. Ability to communicate in the English language, both orally and in writing, in a manner consistent with professional standards, including direction of and participation in the development of high-quality publications which reflect positively on North Central College.

7. Ability to consistently demonstrate outstanding interpersonal skills in dealing with persons both internal and external to the College.

8. Ability to work as an effective member of a team. Commitment to an environment that nurtures inclusion, cooperation, teamwork, and diversity.

Distinguishing Characteristics:

The assistant track and field coach must be able to effectively coach, recruit, develop and retain student-athletes, travel, operate within fiscal boundaries, share in meet management responsibilities, develop and maintain relationships with student-athletes, parents, fans, and campus faculty/staff. The assistant coach must also be able to creatively and effectively develop strategies and programming that will allow student- athletes to reach their full potential in track and field and as students.

Education/Training:

Bachelor's degree is preferred.

Experience:

Progressive coaching and/or competitive experience in the events or sport.

Licenses or Certifications:

Valid driver's license and acceptable driving record is preferred.
