Job Summary:

APP-2 (Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant) works within Pediatric Critical Care and will function as an integral part of the healthcare team. Serves various roles including working directly alongside faculty and staff, providing care to the entire spectrum of patient acuity levels, working semi-autonomously, and serving as a provider to initiate appropriate care.

Core Responsibilities and Essential Functions:

  • Assesses health status and obtains health/medical history and physical examination. Performs/orders preventive and diagnostic procedures such as bone marrow biopsy, etc., identifying health and medical risk factors. Diagnosis, utilizing critical thinking in the diagnostic process, synthesizing/analyzing collected data, and formulating a differential diagnosis based on the history, physical exam, and diagnostic test results.
  • Establishes priorities to meet the health and medical needs of the individual, family, or community. Develops a treatment plan, orders and interprets additional diagnostic tests.
  • Prescribes/orders appropriate pharmacologic and non-pharmacologic interventions.
  • Develops patient education plans. Recommends consultation/referrals as appropriate.
  • Implements plans for interventions based upon established priorities.
  • Maintains a process for systematic follow-up and evaluation of the patient status by determining the effectiveness of the treatment plan with documentation of patient care outcomes.
  • Reassesses and modifies plans with the patient and family as necessary to achieve health and medical goals; provides the patient/family counseling regarding health maintenance, promotion, illness/disease management, and medication use and connect patients with appropriate resources for follow-up care. Uses results of the evaluation to make or recommend the process, policy, procedure, or protocol revisions when warranted. Utilizes evidence-based decision-making in clinical practice.
  • Serves as a team member in the communication and collaboration of care with the patient and family and other health care disciplines.
  • Serves as an integral member of the healthcare team, achieving value-based care objectives measured by patients' healthcare outcomes and quality metrics.
  • Demonstrates dignity and respect for patient and family for patient and family knowledge, values, beliefs, and cultural background in the planning and delivery of care. Encourages patient and family participation in care and decision-making at the level they choose.
  • Contributes to a positive team by acting positively and communicating openly and respectfully while also assisting to resolve conflicts within the team.
  • Maintains accurate, timely, and confidential records in electronic medical records.
  • Facilitates learning of all disciplines of health care students within the institution. Provides educational experiences in the clinical setting through preceptorships and other guided clinical learning. Mentors health care students. Participates in the formal education of students through didactic or other learning methods (i.e., lectures, teaching rounds, case presentations, etc.). Evaluates students, when appropriate.
  • Obtains advanced skill training and/or specialty certification above minimum requirements.
  • Demonstrates leadership that uses critical and reflective thinking. Participates in institutional committees, sub-committees, and work-groups. Encourages to enhance the body of knowledge of APPs through the following list of suggested projects, written publications, oral presentations, posters, continuing education, etc.
  • Performs all other duties as assigned.

Required Minimum Education:

Master's degree in nursing or graduated from an accredited Physician's Assistant program

Required Minimum License(s) and Certification(s):
  • Certified as a Nurse Practitioner by the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC) or equivalent body or Certified as a Physician Assistant by the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants (NCCPA)
  • Current American Heart Association, Basic Life Support (BLS)
  • Licensure(s) - Currently licensed as an advanced practice nurse in the state of GA by the Georgia Board of Nursing or licensure to practice medicine from the GA Composite Medical Board
  • Must maintain status as a certified APP including completion of all requirements for continuing medical education and re-certification

Required Minimum Experience:

2 years or more of experience in specialized area as a Physician's Assistant or Nurse Practitioner with prior procedure experience

Required Minimum Skills:
  • Triage and patient assessment
  • Diagnosis and development of treatment
  • Specialized in Critical Care
  • Previous experience work in a hospital or urgent care setting
