Job Description:

CAS FOResponsibilities

This position is responsible for providing our client companies best-in-class service and financial expertise. This position is accountable for the accounting operations of their clients' company, to include the preparation of periodic financial reports, maintenance of an adequate system of controls designed to mitigate risk, enhancing the accuracy and relevancy of reported financial results, and ensuring that reported results comply with the appropriate accounting framework. Additionally, the controller acts as a business advisor by providing analysis and insights to their clients based on their knowledge of current business trends, industry experience and capabilities of other experts within Baker Tilly.

  • Oversee and provide exceptional service to clients including tax, accounting, and advisory services
  • Manage production of monthly, quarterly, and financial reports and benchmarking
  • Provide recommendations for business and process improvements
  • Work with other managers to insure workflows are efficient and streamlined in and between offices and in and between audit and tax functions
  • Coach, train, and mentor staff on client service, tax, and accounting matters
  • Provide leadership by promoting teamwork, developing proper training and mentoring, and managing workflows

Qualifications
  • Bachelor's Degree in Accounting required
  • CPA and/or MBA preferred
  • Public Accounting experience a plus
  • Six (6) plus years of progressively responsible experience in professional accounting functions
  • Advanced knowledge of accounting principles related to classifying, recording, and summarizing data and making computations to compile financial records
  • Excellent understanding of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP)
  • Knowledge of MS Office, including Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook
  • Experience in QuickBooks On-line (QBO) and/or Sage Intacct is required

What you will do:

The Accounting Manager is a key team member within Baker Tilly's CAS Real Estate outsourced real estate property accounting practice. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Perform work paper reviews supporting property-level and joint-venture financial statements prepared by property accountants
  • Review of annual budgets for assigned properties
  • Ensure seamless interaction and outstanding communication with property management team
  • Serve as a utility player willing and able to perform primary accounting duties for newly acquired properties until a permanent property accountant is assigned
  • Serve as a leader in the construction & development accounting sector of the company providing support and process improvement for the draw process
  • Manage and oversee the timely delivery, completeness and quality assurance of the monthly financial statement closing and reporting process to ownership and joint venture partners. Duties related to monthly reporting include, but are not limited to, the following:
    • Oversee the maintenance, review, analysis and reconciliation of balance sheet and income statement general ledger accounts for assigned properties
    • Prepare/Review end of month journal entries for all material financial statement line items
    • Prepare/Review accrual worksheet in conjunction with the property management team for inclusion in the general ledger
    • Prepare/Review capital expenditure report and roll forward schedule
    • Collaborate with property management to prepare monthly variance analysis
    • Prepare and maintain a fixed asset schedule accounting for additions and dispositions, calculate and record depreciation and prepare roll forward schedules
    • Prepare/Review expense reimbursements for all properties in the same portfolio via intercompany payable or internal transfer
    • Prepare/Review management fee calculation
    • Prepare/Review roll-forward equity schedules for ownership
    • Prepare/Review debt compliance reports for ownership
  • Collaborate with third party accounting firms to provide external audit and income tax support as necessary
  • Oversee/Review cash management and treasury activities for assigned properties and entities including the approval of all wire transfer packages and AP batches prior to disbursement to vendors and ownership
  • Proactively research technical accounting and reporting matters and stay abreast of pending changes in relevant technical guidance
  • Prepare/Review real estate and common area maintenance "true-ups" on an annual basis
  • Lead and plan client engagements. Provide recommendations for reporting and budgeting process improvements based upon knowledge gained relative to the client's operations, processes, and business objectives.
  • Provide oversight and maintenance of accounting software when needed.
  • Effectively delegate and oversee the work efforts by setting goals, providing resources, and removing obstacles.
  • Deliver best-in-class customer service to clients at all times, with an emphasis on being responsive, timely, professional, and accurate.
  • Utilize your entrepreneurial skills to network and build strong relationships internally and externally with clients and the community.
  • Act as liaison to address and resolve client issues, and assist team leaders in researching and providing additional services to client.
  • Continuously evaluate processes and procedures within the client services and implementation functions with emphasis on implementing efficiencies and identification of internal control issues.
  • Assist with the hiring, training and counseling of team members, and with developing performance measures that support the team's strategic direction. Assist in developing and maintaining a culture of teamwork, client service and effective problem solving.
  • Comply with continuing education requirements; participate in professional organizations, independent study, etc. and integrate new knowledge and skills into daily work and share with colleagues as appropriate.
  • Invest in your professional development individually and through participation in firm wide learning and development programs
  • Support the growth and development of team members through the Baker Tilly Care and Teach philosophy, helping associates meet their professional goals
  • Assist in ad-hoc projects and activities where necessary and/or appropriate to foster growth and best practices of the business unit

Qualifications
  • Bachelor's Degree in Accounting; CPA or MSA/MBA strongly preferred
  • 5 + years commercial real estate accounting experience. Exposure to property-level, development/construction and ownership accounting is required
  • Public accounting experience with a top 10 firm strongly preferred
  • Exposure to office properties as well as hospitality properties desired
  • Knowledge of private fund, GAAP and tax accounting
  • Proficient with MS Office software
  • Deep experience in Yardi is required. Job Cost module experience highly preferred. Exposure to MRI preferred
  • Critical thinking ability and a track record of solving problems and driving projects to completion
  • Ability to communicate succinctly and anticipate and resolve issues/problems on a proactive basis
  • Aptitude to be detail-oriented, yet flexible, in a dynamic environment with a focus on meeting deadlines
  • Excellent collaborative skills to work in partnership with colleagues and across various departments
